Airbus plans to start receiving parts for its CityAirbus NextGen electric vertical-take-off-and-landing (eVTOL) prototype, putting it on track to be built this year.
The aircraft will consist of four seats and is expected to be able to fly 80 kilometers (50 miles) at a cruise speed of 120 km/h. The CityAirbus NextGen eVTOL is also believed to have noise levels below 70 dBA during takeoff and landing, and around 65 dBA while in flyover mode.
Should the prototype be constructed this year, Airbus is then expected to adhere to its timeline of conducting flight testing in 2024.
Balkiz Sarihan, head of urban air mobility (UAM) at Airbus, said the impending assemblage of the CityAirbus NextGen eVTOL will not be rushed.
“Now we feel we are at the execution stage,” Balkiz Sarihan, Head of urban air mobility (UAM), Airbus, told a media briefing this week. “The exploration is done and the ideas matured—now it’s getting really serious. For us, it’s always been about taking one step at a time. We don’t care about being the first or the fastest (to market).”
The initial prototype of the CityAirbus NextGen eVTOL will be created at the Airbus Helicopters facility in Donauwörth in the southern part of Germany. The location is important to Airbus’ continued investment in the advanced air mobility (AAM) industry as it is setting up a test center solely focused on its eVTOL initiative there.
