All Nippon Airways (ANA) has partnered with Joby Aviation in order to bring air taxi services to Japan. Toyota Motor Corporation will also be working with the two companies as well, with a focus on how to connect air taxis to ground-based transportation.
This is not the first time Joby has dipped its toes in the Asia-Pacific region, Joby also announced plans to launch air taxi service in South Korea through its partnership with SK Telecom.
Toyota, which led Joby’s $590 million Series C round in 2020, remains the company’s biggest outside investor.
Joby’s electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft has five seats, with a maximum range of 150 miles (241 kilometers) and a top speed of 200 mph (321 km/h). The startup estimates that a trip from Osaka station to Kansai International Airport could take less than 15 minutes in an eVTOL, rather than an hour by car.
JoeBen Bevirt, founder and CEO of Joby, commented “Joby exists to help people save time while reducing their carbon footprint. Japan offers us a spectacular opportunity to do just that with 92% of the population living in urban areas and Tokyo registering as one of the top 20 most congested cities in the world.”
Joby aims to launch commercial operations in 2024 and claims to be the first and only eVTOL company to date to sign a G-1 (stage 4) Certification Basis for its aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). In Japan, final certification is to be approved by the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau, which is part of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism.
