US President Joe Biden signed the Advanced Air Mobility Coordination and Leadership Act into law, in a show of support for the development of the advanced air mobility (AAM) industry.
This bill directs the Department of Transportation to establish an interagency working group to plan and coordinate efforts related to the safety, infrastructure, physical security, cybersecurity, and federal investment necessary to bolster the AAM ecosystem in the US.
The bill was passed by the House in November last year before it became a law.
“We bear witness to a significant day for the growth of advanced air mobility, which will facilitate additional transportation options, create jobs, stimulate economic activity and competitiveness, advance environmental sustainability, foster further advancement in aerospace technology and support emergency preparedness,“ said Pete Bunce, President and Chief Executive Officer of the General Aviation Manufacturers Association (GAMA).
GAMA is an industry trade association representing general aviation that aims to foster and advance the global business and general aviation industry.
“We are hopeful that (the act) will spur federal government departments and agencies to work collaboratively and aggressively towards the development of a national strategy for the integration of advanced air mobility vehicles into the National Airspace System,” Bunce said.
However, a report by the US Government Accountability Office (GAO) has highlighted challenges in the AAM market, which include staff training, approvement of new aircraft designs, public acceptance and development of new ground infrastructure.
