China’s Joy Air Orders 100 eVTOLs

Chinese airline Joy Air has signed an agreement to buy 100 “Honghu Mark1” eVTOLs from a Xi’an-based start-up manufacturer in central-northwest China.

The five-seat eVTOL, which has a tiltrotor design and comes with six propellers, completed its first test flight at Xi’an Space Base Airport on October 31.

According to Joy Air, a privately-owned carrier based at Xi’an Airport, the aircraft will be used for daily commutes, tourism, advertising and firefighting services while working to achieve carbon neutrality.

The team responsible for designing the Honghu Mark1 was also in charge of developing mainland China’s C919 narrow-body jet, which the country hopes will be able to compete with Boeing and Airbus jets.
