EASA Releases Design Specifications for Vertiports

The European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) announced on March 24th, 2022, that it has issued the world’s first design specification for vertiports. Vertiports are areas that are specifically made to let advanced air mobility (AAM) aircraft take-off and land.

As several urban air mobility (UAM) operators are now in the advanced stages of developing aircraft, EASA plans to standardize take-off and landing facilities, especially those in dense urban areas.

The 179-page document, titled “Prototype Technical Design Specifications for Vertiports”, will help guide planners and key organizations to design a safe vertiport.

“With the world’s first guidance for safe vertiport operations, EASA’s ambition is to provide our stakeholders with the ‘gold standard when it comes to safe vertiport design and operational frameworks,” states Patrick Ky, the Executive Director of EASA.

The document was developed by EASA in conjunction with vertiport and electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) manufacturers.

EASA has further plans to create fully detailed regulatory requirements in order for vertiports to operate safely.

The agency previously published guidelines on the design verification of drones in April, 2021.

When it comes to eVTOLs, AutoFlight, which has launched operations in Europe, is now planning on achieving EASA certification for its Prosperity I air taxi.
