EHang, the Chinese eVTOL manufacturer, has signed an agreement with United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based Monarch Airplane Manufacturing to build its first electric aircraft manufacturing facility in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA).
The facility will be built in Abu Dhabi, the capital of the UAE, and will produce and operate electric aircraft and drones to transport passengers and cargo.
A command-and-control center dedicated to autonomous urban air mobility and developing advanced air mobility (AAM) infrastructure will also be set up.
“This venture will support the future of [the] transportation sector in the emirate of Abu Dhabi in line with the government vision to enhance fundamentals of the smart city,” Hussain Ali Alomaeirah, founder and chairman of Monarch, said.
“It provides a new concept of cargo and passenger transportation, utilizing advanced technologies, artificial intelligence, and sustainable energy with zero carbon emissions.”
Rashed Abdulkarim Al Blooshi, undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, added the deal between EHang and Monarch will further boost Abu Dhabi’s image as a leading smart city within the MENA region.
“This partnership reflects the high level of our infrastructure for advanced and smart industries and developed legislative and regulatory frameworks in the emirate, which provides an attractive environment for innovations and investments in advanced industries and technological transformation,” he said.
The partnership with Monarch comes less than a month after EHang was inducted as a member of Japan’s Public-Private Committee for Advanced Air Mobility. The Guangzhou-based firm has also confirmed it is in the home stretch of securing type certification for its two-seater EH216 eVTOL.
