The number of electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) designs has doubled in two years, according to the Vertical Flight Society (VFS), which now has more than 700 aircraft concepts recorded on its website from nearly 350 companies and innovators.
The designs are all recorded in the World eVOTL Aircraft Directory, which is a part of the VFS Electric VTOL News website.
“We were pleased to create these resources to the nascent eVTOL industry six years ago,” said Mike Hirschberg, Executive Director, VFS. “Since then, the directory exploded to catalog every know eVTOL design — from the silly to the serious.”
Over two years, the number of designs cataloged has doubled. The amount of funding being invested in eVTOL aircraft developers has also been increasing.
A new report by market intelligence provider Research Dive said the global eVTOL market is on course to reach revenues of $4.2 billion by 2033. Worsening traffic congestion on the ground and buoyant M&A activity in the sky are driving the rosy outlook, the company said.
The industry has seen a spike in investment with several leading eVTOL companies that went public in 2021 — namely Archer Aviation, Eve Air Mobility, Joby Aviation, Lilium and Vertical Aerospace.
VFS’s World eVTOL Aircraft Directory is divided up into propulsion system approaches, and currently includes vectored thrust approaches, “lift + cruise” configurations, “wingless (multicopter)”, hover bikes and personal flying devices and electric rotorcraft. The concepts are from 347 entities in 48 countries. The most prolific countries of origin are the US (124 entities), UK (24), China (21), Germany (19) and Canada (17), accounting for nearly 60% of all design entities.
