Joby has applied to the Japan Civil Aviation Bureau (JCAB) for the certification of its eVTOL aircraft design following an agreement between the Japanese and US regulatory authorities.
The two regulatory authorities agreed to announce a streamlined approval process for US applicants who need certification for their eVTOL aircraft designs in Japan.
Joby’s validation of an FAA (Federal Aviation Administration) “type certification,” the first of its type, is a necessary step to the launch of aerial ridesharing services and commercial operation of its five-seat piloted aircraft in Japan.
“We’re incredibly excited about the potential for electric aerial ridesharing to offer a new form of clean and affordable urban and regional connectivity across Japan,” said JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Joby Aviation.
The California-based company aims to provide commercial passenger services and connect people in urban areas with its all-electric aircraft, dubbed the Joby S4.
“We strongly believe that a collaborative approach to regulation helps to foster greater safety and, by working hand-in-hand on certification, Japan and the U.S. are ensuring that both countries continue to play a leading role in the adoption of climate-friendly transportation,” Bevirt said.
Joby had partnered with Japanese companies including Toyota and ANA Holdings. The company is also a member of Japan’s Public-Private Conference for the Future Air Mobility Revolution.
