Joby Aviation, the U.S.-based electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) manufacturer, has acquired its second of four system reviews from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for its S4 air taxi launch.
The review, as part of the company’s program to launch commercial eVTOL passenger service, was conducted in person with a multiday audit by the FAA at Joby’s facilities in Marina, California.
The system reviews can ensure that the architecture and development process of the aircraft can meet the FAA’s safety standards. Other types of certifications including the ongoing submission of Means of Compliance and area-specific certification plans are also underway.
“Progress on certification is a key area of focus for this nascent sector, and we’re pleased to mark our continued leadership with the successful completion of our second System Review,” said Didier Papadopoulos, Head of Aircraft OEM, Joby.
Joby aims to certify its aircraft in time to commence commercial passenger service in 2025, which was delayed by a year citing regulatory and internal issues.
The company completed its first of its Systems and Compliance Reviews earlier this year and obtained its Part 135 Air Carrier Certificate in May ahead of schedule.
