Skyports has recently announced its acquisition of one of only two public heliports in London. Previously known as the Falcon Heliport, it is located in East London and is minutes away from Canary Wharf financial district.
The deal is part of Skyports’ strategy in securing, developing, and operating a network of vertiports to enable the transition to emission-free aviation in the UK. According to Skyports, the heliport site will form an integral part of its ground infrastructure network.
Operating under the new name of ‘Skyports London Heliport’ the landing site will continue to serve helicopter operators. Furthermore, Skyports has already started using the heliport for testing its vertiport systems.
Flight time from Canary Wharf in an electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft is estimated at 20 minutes to any of London’s airports. Additionally, flying to Bristol will take under 50 minutes.
Skyport believes that eVTOL aircraft are quieter, greener, and cheaper than traditional helicopters. “This is an exciting moment for Skyports. The acquisition demonstrates our ambition to deliver a network of operational landing sites for eVTOLs and our commitment to making the UK a leader in decarbonization of domestic aviation, “ says Damian Kysely, Head of Europe & Middle East at Skyports. “The heliport also provides us with an important live operating environment in which we can safely develop and test our vertiport systems, collect operational data, and mature our vertiport technologies.”
