Hyundai Motor Group’s Supernal will collaborate with Microsoft to develop Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) technology, as well as the commercialization of future air vehicles.
The partnership announced on January 3, will see the US-based eVTOL developer leveraging Microsoft’s computing power to advance autonomy, digital operations and cloud integration technologies.
“In ushering in a new frontier of transportation with Advanced Air Mobility, Supernal has an obligation to ensure safe and secure deployment of eVTOL vehicles,” said Dr. Jaiwon Shin, President of Hyundai Motor Group and CEO of Supernal.
Microsoft will provide an augmented reality (AR) headset — HoloLens 2 and an artificial intelligence (AI) platform — Project AirSim, to simulate the real-world conditions of autonomous aircraft transportation.
“Air transport is a key pillar in the democratization of mobility, connecting more people, goods and places through safe flight experiences,” said Ulrich Homann, corporate vice president Cloud + AI, Microsoft. “With the Microsoft Cloud, Supernal can unlock the computing power it takes to build, validate, and deploy electric air vehicles at scale, spurring the commercialization of advanced air mobility solutions.”
In an effort to develop AAM infrastructure, Supernal launched the first functional vertiport Air-One in the UK earlier in 2022. It has also partnered with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to study the possibility of building eVTOL stations in Los Angeles.
