The UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has decided to follow in the European Aviation Safety Agency’s (EASA) footsteps by using the Special Conditions (SC)-VTOL certification standards.
This will form the basis for UK certification of electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) aircraft.
The Special Condition was released by the EASA in July 2019.
The CAA says that the safety levels of the (SC)-VTOL allow for strong air and ground protection for UK customers.
The Special Condition also lets manufacturers and the CAA build on more safety requirements as new technologies are released.
“The decision to adopt SC-VTOL as our certification basis will support UK manufacturers and enable them to easily access the global market for eVTOL aircraft,” says Rob Bishton, CAA’s Group Director for Safety and Airspace Regulation.
The CAA will continue to engage and collaborate with other aviation authorities around the world, such as the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to share insights and information.
