Volocopter Completes First Manned eVTOL Test Flight

Volocopter, a German electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) startup, conducted its first crewed public test flight in Italy. The aircraft took off from Rome’s Fiumicino Airport, which houses the country’s first advanced air traffic testing vertiport, and marks the first time the vertiport was ever used.

During the test flight, the test pilots flew the Volocopter eVTOL, dubbed the VoloCity air taxi, twice along a “figure 8” flight path at a speed of 40 km/h (25 mph) and at a height of 131 feet.

Fiumicino Airport is working towards launching commercial operations between the airport and Rome by 2024, so the reveal and use of the vertiport as a functional port for eVTOL takeoff and landing marks a key development in Italy’s AAM sector.

The country also hopes its first vertiport sets an example for the design and construction of international vertiports.

In May this year, Volocopter’s four-seat UAV taxi, VoloConnect, also completed its first test flight after only 17 months in the making.
