Bombardier to Equip Challenger 3500 with Iridium Certus

Bombardier’s Challenger 3500 will become the first mid-size jet equipped with Iridium Certus connectivity.

The Canadian aircraft manufacturer is collaborating with Collins Aerospace to provide the Iridium Certus satellite communication platform on Challenger 3500 jets.

Iridium Certus has a top connection speed of 704 Kbps through the constellation of more than 66 cross-linked satellites, with lower latency and larger coverage.

“By incorporating the new Certus system to Challenger 3500 jets, we offer our clients a highly reliable connectivity service with pole-to-pole coverage. This shows our unwavering commitment to our clients,” said Jean-Christophe Gallagher, Executive Vice President, Aircraft Sales and Bombardier Defense.

According to Nate Boelkins, Vice President and General Manager Business and Regional Avionics at Collins Aerospace, the new Iridium SATCOM solution is faster and lighter than legacy SATCOM systems. The smaller size of the antenna can also reduce the overall weight of the aircraft and thus save fuel costs while flying.

The L-Band service offering is in line with Bombardier’s commitment to sustainability. Earlier this month, Bombardier’s Global 5500 and Global 6500 aircraft received Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), joining the Global 7500 and Challenger 3500 family as the only business jets with EPD designations.
