According to a report in India’s Economic Times, the country’s super-rich are increasingly buying up long-range private jets that can fly them as far as Europe.
The article, accompanied by a picture of one of Verizon’s Gulfstream G450 wrongly captioned as a Bombardier Global 7500, continues on by saying that the acquisitions are being made thanks to an increase in personal wealth, and a preference for exclusive travel.
India’s private jet fleet has been slowly growing over the past few years, although its growth has slowed in the past few years thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The country is however home to some of the busiest domestic private jet flight routes in Asia, with data from German business aviation consultancy WINGX Advance showing that Delhi to Mumbai is the third most flown route by private jets across Asia-Pacific.
Overall, three Indian airports appear in the top 10 list of most active airports for business aviation in Asia-Pacific, with Chennai joining Delhi and Mumbai.
According to Global Sky Media’s Asia-Pacific 2021 business jet fleet report, there were 140 private jets in India at the end of 2021, a modest increase from 137 at the end of 2020. The net addition of three aircraft was thanks to one new delivery and eight pre-owned additions offsetting the loss of six aircraft from the fleet.
