Pratt & Whitney Canada has unveiled the PW545D engine that will be used to power Textron Aviation’s newly released Cessna Citation Ascend.
The newly developed engine has seen improvements in specific fuel consumption (SFC), thrust, and time between overhauls (TBO), which make it more powerful and easier to maintain. The engine can run on blends of up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which will play an important role in achieving the aviation industry’s target of net-zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2050.
Drawing on the successes of the PW545C, the PW545D utilizes new materials and technologies to deliver a more efficient high-pressure compressor. The advanced exhaust mixer can reduce fuel consumption and the overall noise produced.
The PW545D engine comes equipped with Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) technology, enabling the Citation Ascend to integrate auto-throttle technology. This makes the aircraft easier to control, more efficient, and decreases the amount of work for the pilots.
“The PW500 turbofan family has established itself as the engine of choice for light to mid-size business jets thanks to its proven safety, reliability and durability, attractive operating economics and comprehensive maintenance plans,” said Nicholas Kanellias, Vice President, General Aviation.
As the latest engine in this family, the PW545D drew experience from more than 4,600 PW500 engines produced to date, which have accumulated over 22 million flying hours. The new engine has an increased time between overhauls (TBO) of up to 6,000 hours, compared to 3,000 to 5,000 hours for normal jet engines and turboprops.
The PW545D engine will enhance the adaptability of the Citation Ascend, making it more efficient when being used for charter services, passenger transportation, and corporate flights.
Pratt & Whitney Canada’s engine fleet has amassed 1 billion hours of flight time, with 350 million coming from Textron Aviation’s fleet or aircraft.
