Satcom Direct Installs Plane Simple Ka-band on its G550

In-flight connectivity service provider Satcom Direct has installed the Plane Simple Ka-band terminal on its Gulfstream G550. The system is undergoing test and validation through regular flight operations before the finalization of the design.

The prototype terminal operates on Inmarsat’s Jet ConneX broadband Satcom service powered by its Global Xpress satellite constellation. The terminal designed for mid to large-size jets has two line-replaceable units (LRUs) – the tail-mounted antenna and the SD Modem Unit.

“We’ve rigorously tested the Plane Simple Ku-band, which has performed beyond expectations. Now, with the validation of the Ka-band terminal, we’re adding more value to our offering to meet the needs of our customers,” said Chris Moore, SD president.

Customer in-service evaluations and subsequent supplemental type certificates (STC) are scheduled to take place by the end of 2023 following the tests.

“We anticipate that SD hardware technology, combined with our enhanced next-generation satellite network, will reinforce our position as the premium connectivity experience for SD customers. We are looking forward to validating this through the testing process,” Kai Tang, Head of Business Aviation, Inmarsat, said.

In October 2022, Asian Sky Group was invited to take a flight on the company’s G550 to test out its connectivity options.
