The UK Department for Transport launched its aviation Jet Zero Strategy at the Farnborough Airshow in July this year.
The strategy, which was published for draft comments in July 2021, maps out the development path of the UK’s aviation industry in its goal to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050.
According to the strategy, the UK is due to implement the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) by 2024, part of which involves the country building at least five commercial scale sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) plants by 2025.
The UK government previously issued a Net Zero strategy in October 2021, which identified aviation as one of the UK’s largest causes of carbon emissions.
Aviation is a globally competitive industry, and aviation decarbonization is also an opportunity to create new jobs and introduce innovative new technologies.
Over the course of the next three years, the UK will make a £685 million investment in the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) project and invest £180 million to support the commercialization and fuel trials of the UK SAF plants.
“Decarbonizing aviation is one of the great industrial challenges of our time, and this strategy provides the clear vision and leadership needed to meet the challenges. Importantly, the shift to a cleaner global aviation industry also presents a huge opportunity for the UK to secure economic growth and jobs,” said Kwasi Kwarteng, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.
