The Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) on March 7 released a preliminary report containing details on a deadly helicopter crash that had killed four.
The two sightseeing helicopters collided at Sea World on the Gold Coast in the Australian state of Queensland on January 2, when one landing aircraft carrying six people on board collided with another one that was taking off with seven passengers. The accident killed four people with three being seriously injured.
The two Eurocopter EC130B4 helicopters, registered VH-XH9 (XH9) and VH-XKQ (XKQ) were operating from separate helipads about 220m away.
The pilot of XH9 said they did not hear a taxi call over the radio from the pilot of XKQ nor see the helicopter departing from the park helipad, although video footage taken by passengers in both helicopters showed images of the other helicopter.
However, the statement from the pilots will be subject to detailed analysis by further investigation. No analysis or findings are provided in the report.
The research was conducted through interviews with one surviving pilot, passengers, and witnesses with supporting video footage.
“The ATSB has released this preliminary report to detail the circumstances of this tragic accident as we currently understand them, but it is important to stress that we are yet to make findings,” said ATSB Chief Commissioner Angus Mitchell.
