FAA Releases Vertiports Guidelines

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) released new design guidelines for vertiports and vertistops to provide key information in the development of Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).

The design standards touch on factors including safety design elements, visual markings, changing and electric infrastructure as well as the construction of vertiports in and on top of existing airports.

“Our country is stepping into a new era of aviation. These vertiport design standards provide the foundation needed to begin safely building infrastructure in this new era,” said Shannetta Griffin, P.E., Associate Administrator for Airports, FAA.

The guidelines will help airport owners, operators and infrastructure developers begin the development of facilities.

Vertiport guidance is expected to evolve into a performance-based design standard, potentially with aircraft grouped by their performance characteristics.

Vertiports are areas that are specifically made to let advanced air mobility (AAM) aircraft take off and land, along with other services including fueling, defueling, scheduled maintenance, scheduled repairs, or storage of aircraft. Vertistops are only used for unloading passengers or cargo.
