The Chinese Central Government has approved a plan to expand Macau International Airport in a bid to further open Macao’s air transport market.
The airport expansion and the related land reclamation of over 129 hectares under the Macau International Airport Master Plan will be executed in different phases according to demand for traffic. Upon completion, the airport capacity will be almost doubled to handle 15 million passengers per year. The airport handled a total of 9.6 million passengers in 2019.
The Macao SAR Government hopes the move would facilitate the revival and development of its aviation industry, which is still recovering from the impact of COVID-19 related travel restrictions and border closures, and help create a more sustainable path for Macao’s civil aviation sector.
The Macau International Airport Master Plan was approved by the Macao SAR Government in 2016, and the phased expansion of the airport was then included in its Five-Year Development Plan for 2016-2020. The Macao SAR Government submitted a formal request for the plan to the Central Government in August 2021.
The expansion of Macau International Airport and related land reclamation would broaden the development potential of the region, said Ho Iat Seng, Chief Executive, Macao SAR.
“It was a step conducive to Macao further aligning with overall national development, and participating in the Belt and Road initiative, thus reinforcing the basis for the city’s economic recovery and adequate economic diversification,” added Ho.
