FAA Awards USD$19 Million for Aviation Noise Reduction Research

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has provided USD$19 million in research grants to 14 universities to find new ways to reduce aviation noise.

The grants are part of the Aviation Sustainability Center (ASCENT) program, which aims to reduce noise pollution and emissions associated with aviation. Prior to that, the FAA has invested a total of USD$130 million in ASCENT research since the program started in 2014.

The universities will work on various projects related to aircraft noise reduction investigating new technologies including an over-wing jet engine design, methods to simulate and predict noise levels, as well as how to reduce the noises of advanced air mobility vehicles and helicopters.

Boston University and the University of Pennsylvania won the largest funding to study the effects of noise on communities and public health.

Other projects will focus on sustainable aviation fuel, alternative jet fuel supply chains, engine technology, commercial space, and environmental measurement.

“The university teams are creating a new path for the aviation industry and our investments in the research are paying dividends today,” said Assistant Administrator for Policy, International Affairs, and Environment Laurence Wildgoose.

The ASCENT is a federally funded research organization co-led by Washington State University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Universities including Georgia Institute of Technology, University of Illinois, Pennsylvania State University, Stanford University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology also took part in the research program.
